Severino’s dominant outing not enough for Mets – Cubs Game 1

The New York Mets fall to the Cubs in the first of four 3-1.

Luis Severino was dealing tonight taking a no-hitter into the 8th inning, but the Cubs would tie the game on a Madrigal fielder’s choice that Joey Wendle tried to get a double play on. Wendle had Busch dead to rights at home, but the decision to go to second base cost the Mets a one run lead going into the 9th.

Edwin Diaz then came on in the 9th letting up a double to Tauchman, and left a pitch hanging for Morel to connect to make it a two run game. A rare mistake for Diaz as he gave up his second home run of the season in his sixth appearance.

Offensively Brandon Nimmo started the game off with a lead off solo blast, but the Mets could not get anything going the rest of the game. In the ninth an Alonso and McNeil walk put the tying runs on base, but Hector Neris would strike out DJ Stewart and Brett Baty to end the game. A heart breaking loss for the Mets as Severino’s effort will go unnoticed.

The Mets will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they face another tough pitcher for the Cubs, Javier Assad.
