Morning Coffee: Scott Rough Outing, Severino Bump Day

Good morning Mets fans, after a brutal game last night today is a new day in hopes of a bounce back performance against the Marlins.

Yesterday Christian Scott had his first rough outing in the major leagues only pitching four innings giving up four earned runs. It was known before Scott was called up that he was prone to the long ball, giving up seven home runs over his five starts with Triple-A Syracuse. The difference between those home runs and the one given up against the Marlins was that they were mostly solo home runs.

The Marlins managed to strand a couple of hits together in the second inning and Nick Fortes capitalized with a 396 foot home run to left center. That would be the downfall of Scott’s start as Carlos Mendoza would call it after the 4th inning.

Christian Scott Final Line:

4 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3K, 1 BB

Regardless of Scott’s outing the Mets offense was nowhere to be seen. The only threat they had was in the top of the 5th when they had first and third with one out. Immediately followed were two swinging strikeouts from Tomas Nido and Tyrone Taylor to end the inning. At this point it was still a 4-0 game and it felt that the Mets could get something going, but Jesus Luzardo would not let that happen.

The Mets core has really struggled to start the season, with Lindor batting .125 and McNeil batting .190 over the last seven days fans are starting to speculate a fire sale come the trade deadline. Mets owner Steve Cohen even hinted on X that major changes will be made at the trade deadline. A frustration social media post, but it is only May and a lot can happen from now until July 30th.

For today’s game Luis Severino will battle it out with Braxton Garrett.

Severino has been the bright spot in the Mets rotation this year posting a 3.00 ERA with 41 strikeouts over 45 innings pitched. The Mets are starting to see what Severino can be when fully healthy, as he gets stronger as the season progresses. He likes to pitch in warm weather and it would not be surprising to see statistics slowly get better throughout the course of the season.

Alabama native Braxton Garrett will get the start for the Marlins. Garrett is coming off of a left shoulder impingement that kept him on the injured list the first month and a half of the season. In his return to the Marlins rotation he pitched five and a third allowing 5 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, striking out 8 against the Phillies. Garrett has faced the Mets seven times in his career and is 0-2 with an ERA of 3.90 striking out 26.
