Arlington TX– After a five run 5th inning from the Rangers the Mets rally from behind to score five runs over the last four innings to extend there win streak to seven in a row. This is the longest win streak of the season and are now just two games under .500. Francisco Alvarez came up in a huge way to tie the game in the 8th inning with a two run double and Pete Alonso with a clutch RBI double ultimately sealed it for New York. The Mets are now 18-1 in the last 19 games Francisco Alvarez has played and have a record of 11-4 in the month of June.
“I never felt that we were out of that game. I think that was the feeling for everybody. We got down 6-2 and long ways to go, we felt good. Nimmo goes out there, hits a homer and I was like alright I got a good feeling about this one lets keep putting pressure on them. Sevy kept us in the game when it was hard for him. Diekman got huge outs and the big inning off a tough reliever Robertson. The at bats were incredible and Alvarez’s at bat was huge. For us to come back in the 9th and put together some good at bats and finally Pete getting the big hit huge team win for us,” Mendoza said.
While Severino gave up six earned runs he battled his way through six and a third to preserve the bullpen. Jake Diekman would relieve Severino after he retired the first batter in the seventh and recorded two huge outs to keep it a three run deficit. After the Mets tied the game Reed Garrett trotted out at the bottom of the 8th and was able to retire the side, setting up a save opportunity for Edwin Diaz when the Mets took the lead in the 9th.
“He is a gamechanger. When you know you got Edwin Diaz ready to go at his best and with conviction, executing his pitches, attacking hitters. Lead off guy got on and right away went to slider got a ground-ball got a little turn by Lindor and Iglesias. Right after Taveras got the last out. It’s a huge difference you can piece it together and try to get the ball to him you feel good about your chances,” Mendoza on Edwin Diaz.
Diaz now has seven saves on the season and Garrett’s win total is now up to seven. The bullpen has improved drastically since Francisco Alvarez’s return and the Mets now find themselves only half a game back from a playoff spot. The Mets will look to make it eight wins in a row tomorrow night in Arlington when Sean Manaea faces off against Andrew Heaney.
