Make It Stop, Mets Struggles Continue Against Cleveland

The Cleveland Guardians take game one of the series against the New York Mets by a final score of 3-1.

This team has been hard to watch over the last 20 days. In the month of May the Mets have a record of 6-12 and are now 5 games below .500. There is a new story every night with this team whether it is the starting pitching, the bullpen, or the offense. Their has not been a complete effort from the whole entire team since they took 2 out of 3 games against the St. Louis Cardinals back in April.

In tonight’s game it was the offense that could not bring runners in against Ben Lively. The Mets had first and second with one out in the 6th inning, but J.D. Martinez would strike out swinging and Tyrone Taylor would walk to load the bases for Brett Baty. This was the chance for the Mets to do some damage with two outs, but Brett Baty struck out swinging for his third strikeout of the game to end the inning.

Ben Lively Final Line:

5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7K, 0 BB

Tylor Megill would find himself some trouble in his first inning back from the injured list. Josh Naylor would single to left field and a throwing error from Brandon Nimmo would load the bases. The very next batter would single to right field that scored two to give the Guardians a 2-0.

Megill would settle down after the first inning striking out the side in the second and only giving up one run the rest of his outing. Their was definitely some nerves in the first inning, but a successful return for Tylor after missing the first month and a half of the season.

Tylor Megill Final Line:

5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB

The question now remains, what changes need to be made moving forward? Is it time to give young guys an opportunity to get meaningful at bats, is it to early to start shopping around players on the current roster, do you continue to let the season play out and pray for a turn around, will this team ever get it going before it is to late?

Their is not a correct answer to any of these questions but as of right now the Mets are 2.5 games back from the San Diego Padres for the final wild card spot. Regardless of how horrible this stretch of baseball the Mets are on, they are not out of the playoff picture in the national league. Just last month this same Mets team took 2 out of 3 games against the Braves, Royals, and Dodgers. It is in this team somewhere to get out of this slump, but when will it happen if at all?
