The sequence of events that has happened in the last six hours is truly unbelievable, even as a Mets fan.
Prior to the start of the game it was announced that Edwin Diaz would head to the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder impingement. Regardless of how his season has gone thus far it is a tough blow to the Mets with an already thin bullpen. Immediately after this announcement in the bottom of the first inning Pete Alonso gets drilled in the hand from a James Paxton fastball forcing him to exit the game. As of right now the X-rays have come back negative, but still have to hold your breath as the team will not have CT scan results until tomorrow.
At some point you think you have seen it all, but today’s game may have just put that thought into the dirt.
The Dodgers completed the sweep over the Mets in a 10-3 blowout thanks to a 6 run 8th inning with the most obscure ejection that you will ever see. Jorge Lopez came on to relieve Adam Ottavino after giving up two runs and following a Shohei Ohtani home run Lopez was ejected from the ballgame from the third base umpire. Lopez responded by untucking his jersey and threw his glove over the protective netting into the stands for a lucky fan to go home with a unique souvenir.
That is about where it has been with the Mets through the first third of the season and following the loss the team had a private meeting before speaking with the media. Anthony DiComo reported, “Following one of their worst losses in recent memory, punctuated by Jorge Lopez losing his cool and firing his glove into the stands, the Mets are delaying media entry into their clubhouse to hold a team meeting”.
It is unclear as to what the main points during this private team meeting were, but Brandon Nimmo spoke to the media after the fact. “We had a team meeting. It’s no secret that things aren’t going the way we want around here and so we just open the floor and talked about ways we can turn it around, ways we can still have a good process moving forward and ways that we can stay positive even through this tough time”, Nimmo said.
The Mets will now host the Arizona Diamondbacks in a four game series at Citi Field starting tomorrow night at 7:10 PM on SNY.
