Is this Mets team better than the eye can see?

New York Mets' Pete Alonso Talks Trash to Atlanta Braves Pitcher Bryce Elder After Hitting Home Run - Fastball

4/9/24 Braves 6 Mets 5

Despite an almost miracle comeback late in the game the Mets fall to the Atlanta Braves in the second game of this four game set.

The biggest story today is early runs from the Braves who seemed to hit everything Adrian Houser threw at them. Houser gave up 8 hits over 5 innings pitched with 5 earned runs. Houser who is primarily a contact pitcher had his hands full before the game even started. He has not recorded a win against the Braves during his career thus far and the Braves took advantage early. At one point Houser gave up 6 straight singles and the rest was history.

Despite an off performance from Houser the Braves had multiple opportunities to put the game away. This gave the Mets a chance to complete the comeback after Pete Alonso’s 3 run homerun cut the lead in half in the 8th inning. The Mets than scored 2 runs in the 9th but Alonso ended the game with a strikeout and could not bring around Lindor.

Now at this point of the season the age old question that comes to mind is are the Mets better than what there record indicate. Every Mets fans see that key players on the team have been hitting the baseball hard, but have been unlucky. Lindor, Bader, McNeil… all have hit the ball hard but have not been able to find the holes in opposing teams defenses. One stat that indicates this is that the Mets lineup ranks tied for 22nd in strikeouts. To put that in perspective the Braves are tied with the Mets in this category, and the Royals who come to Citi Field this weekend rank 24. These hits will eventually fall and when they do this lineup will be a very dangerous one.
