Six Run Inning Spells Defeat for Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies take game one of the MLB World Tour London Series against the New York Mets 7-2.

The Mets get off to an early start from a Francisco Lindor lead off double. Following a Pete Alonso strikeout and a Brandon Nimmo fly out designated hitter J.D. Martinez gets hit by a pitch making it first and second with two outs. The next batter Starling Marte would rip a double down the left field line to make it a 1-0 game in the bottom of the 1st.

Sean Manaea was cruising the first go-around of the Phillies lineup, but notorious Met killer Bryce Harper hit a long fly ball to right field to tie the game in the top of the 4th. Alec Bohm followed the Harper home run with a single to put a man on with one out. Manaea would get a fly out for the second out, but a walk to Bryson Stott put two men on with two outs and Edmundo Sosa delivers an RBI single to break the tie. The very next batter Whit Merrifield adds on to the lead with a three run home run to take a commanding four run lead. Two batters later Kyle Schwarber singles to center field to cap off a six run 4th inning.

Sean Manaea Final Line:

3.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 K

In the bottom of the 4th the Mets threatened with a two out double from Jose Iglesias to make it second and third with Luis Torrens up to bat. However, Ranger Suarez would limit any threat with a strikeout to keep it a 6-1 ballgame.

The Mets had a great opportunity in the 5th inning starting with another lead off hit from Lindor and an Alonso ground rule double made it second and third with no outs. Suarez would get Brandon Nimmo to strikeout and a fielder’s choice would bring home Lindor to make it 6-2, but the Mets could not bring home Alonso leaving the 5th runner in scoring position to dry.

The bottom of the 6th found a potential two out rally from the bottom of the Mets order. After a missed hit by pitch review Jose Iglesias hits a two out single to keep the inning alive. The next batter Luis Torrens hit a hard single to make it first and second with Lindor due up. Following the Torrens single the Phillies would make a pitching change as Orion Kerkering comes into face Lindor. Kerkering would then get Lindor to strikeout that leaves another runner in scoring position stranded.

Mets reliever Adrian Houser continues to shine in his new role with the team as his day wraps up in the 7th inning with a two strikeout day over two and two thirds pitched. The lefty Danny Young came in with the task of getting Bryce Harper out after a two out hit from JT Reamluto. Young would get Harper to strikeout to end the top half of the 7th keeping it a four run ballgame.

The Phillies would extend their lead in the top of the 8th from a towering home run off the bat of Nick Castellanos to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

In the bottom of the 9th the Mets had another chance to do some damage and make a comeback. Lindor managed to work a walk with one out to bring Alonso to the plate. Pete would hit a hard single to make it first and second with still one out. Brandon Nimmo then ropped a single to load the bases for J.D. Martinez. However, Jose Ruiz would get Martinez to ground into a game ending double play.

Jose Quintana will face Taijuan Walker in the London Series finale as the Mets look to get a win before flying back home to get ready for another National League East match-up with the Miami Marlins.
