The Arizona Diamondbacks give the Mets a beating on Darryl Strawberry’s number retirement day 10-5.
Prior to the start of the game the Mets had an emotional ceremony to honor Darryl Strawberry. Darryl is now the 7th Met to have his number retired and gave an excellent speech accepting this accomplishment. During his speech before thanking the fans Strawberry had this to say on leaving New York; “One thing I want to say to you fans. I mean this from the bottom of my heart. I am so sorry for ever leaving you guys. I am truly and deeply sorry that I ever left you guys. I have never played baseball in front of fans like you guys. You make Queens and Shea Stadium home. Was nothing better than playing for you guys all those years”.
Strawberry played with the Mets for eight seasons and racked in multiple awards. He was a seven time all-star, two time Silver Slugger Award winner, and the National League Rookie of the Year in 1983. He is still the franchise leader in career home runs with 252, which is 10 more than David Wright who played for 14 years with the Mets. Strawberry’s individual accomplishments helped the Mets win two division titles, a National League Pennant, and the 1986 World Series. “Little did I know that I would come to the greatest place to play baseball. Little did I know I would play in front of the greatest fans, forever”, said Strawberry.
In today’s game the Arizona Diamondbacks were able to capitalize on the Mets mistakes. In the top of the third Sean Manaea had runners on first and second with two outs, but a walk to Randal Grichuk would load the bases for Christian Walker. Manaea would leave a sweeper hanging as Walker connects for a grand-slam to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Diamondbacks would add extra insurance in the top of the 6th on an RBI single from Blaze Alexander to make it a four run ballgame. The very next at bat Josh Walker throws a pitch in the dirt that bounces away from Tomas Nido and tries to gun down Alexander at third, but Nido launches the throw into left field to make it 6-1 Diamondbacks.
Over the next two innings the Diamondbacks would add on four more runs to make it 10-1 heading into the 9th inning. In the 9th the Mets hinted at a possible comeback with RBIs from Tomas Nido and Jose Iglesias to make it 10-3. The next at bat after Iglesias, Pete Alonso connects with a fastball to make it 10-5 with two outs, but former Met Paul Sewald came in to relieve Brandon Hughes to get JD Martinez to fly out to end the game.
The New York Mets will look to win their first series since May 7th against the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow afternoon. Jose Quintana will face off against Brandon Pfaadt at 1:40 PM on WPIX.
