Just two days after the Mets had a team meeting following an embarrassing loss against the Dodgers they won their second straight game for the first time in three weeks.
Luis Severino found trouble in the first inning giving up three runs on a pair of singles and a fielders coach. The Mets immediately answered with a bases clearing triple from Starling Marte to tie the game and Mark Vientos reached on an infield single to score Marte to take a one run lead.
No one really knows what was said in this team meeting on Wednesday evening, but whatever it was has worked. This team has a new swagger to them and have officially made a new celebration after hits. A fist in the air on one hand and a slapping motion with the other has been seen from virtually every player that has had a hit over the last two days. What it means is up to speculation, but a new celebration fans have seen in the Arizona series.
The Mets offense was not done after the first inning comeback. In the bottom of the 4th inning 8 Mets came up to bat that included RBIs from Pete Alonso, Starling Marte, and Mark Vientos to extend the Mets lead to 8-4. Starling Marte had a game to remember with a monster performance at the plate driving in four over two hits. Marte was a major part in the 2022 season, but has been up and down over the last two years at the plate. With Mets slugger Francisco Alvarez inching back to the bigs and if Marte is able to get going this Mets team can make a serious run in the month of June.
Severino continued to battle the whole entire start only allowing two runs after a disastrous first inning and thanks to the Mets run support earned his third win of the season.
Luis Severino Final Line:
5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 1 BB
Following Severino’s exit the Mets provided a little more insurance which turned out to be very important in the win. For the second night in a row J.D. Martinez homered to extend the Mets lead to 10-5. Martinez now has five home runs on the season all of which in the month of May and is starting to heat up. Martinez is showing the same signs post cortisone shot with the Mets as he did with the Dodgers last year. A professional hitter who is now displaying his power over the last two games.
However, it is never a Mets game without a little twist. Sean Reid-Foley came in the top of the 9th to close the game out, but after an infield single and a walk to put two men on with one out Mets manager Carlos Mendoza made a pitching change. Mendoza decided to put Reed Garrett in to limit the damage and a near all time comeback was almost happening before Mets fans eyes. Joc Pederson sent a long fly ball to right field for a three run home run to cut the lead down to two runs and the very next batter Christian Walker goes back to back to make it a one run ballgame. Garrett was able to lock in after two mistakes to get Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to chase to end the game.
The Mets are now 24-33 on the season sitting at 4.5 games back from the San Francisco Giants for the final wild card spot. Sean Manaea will face Slade Cecconi tonight as the Mets look to win the series against the Diamondbacks in Flushing.
