The New York Mets defeat the San Francisco Giants 4-3
After what seemed like it was almost impossible at this point in the season the Mets have finally won a baseball game. Adrian Houser picks up his first win as a Met coming out of the bullpen after Sean Manaea tossed five innings striking out six Giants giving up two earned runs.
Three weeks ago after his sixth start of the season Adrian Houser was moved to the bullpen. He had a 8.16 ERA through 28 and 2/3rds innings pitched and with the call up of Christian Scott, Houser was the odd man out of the rotation. Since then Tylor Megill is now back in the starting rotation and David Peterson will make his first appearance of the year on Wednesday, Houser needed to make a name for himself in the bullpen today and he possibly has saved himself from a DFA at this point in time.
This was not a classic Mets game at first. The San Francisco Giants got off to an early lead from a pick-off error from Tomas Nido that scored Matt Chapman to make it a 1-0 ballgame. However, Harrison Bader who had a monster day would immediately answer singling to right field to score DJ Stewart to tie the game at 1-1 in the 2nd inning.
In the third inning Brett Wisely hit a monster home run to center field to take the lead back for the Giants. Wisley has put on a hitting clinic against the Mets in this series going 5 for 7 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
The game would be quiet until the top of the 6th when Heliot Ramos grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Wilmer Flores to make it a two run lead for the Giants.
Heading into the 9th inning the Mets found themselves fighting back to win the game instead of not trying to blow it. Brandon Nimmo would reach on a lead off infield single and J.D. Martinez singled to right field the very next at bat. With two men on and one out Jeff McNeil would come up to the plate and get hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
The most clutch hitter the Mets have had in their lineup, Harrison Bader stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and would double to left field to score Nimmo and Marte (pitch runner for Martinez) to tie the game in the 9th at 3-3. Bader now has five game tying or go-ahead RBI hits from the 6th inning or later on the season.
With McNeil and Bader at second and third base the Giants intentionally walked Brett Baty to load the bases with one out. Carlos Mendoza decided to pinch hit Omar Narvaez for Tyrone Taylor and the gamble paid off.
Before this at bat Narvaez was hitting .150 and it seemed like the game would most likely be determined by the next batter Francisco Lindor. However, miracles do happen even for the Mets and Narvaez took the second pitch he saw and singled to center field to walk it off for the Mets in the bottom of the 9th.
The Mets will be in Flushing to continue the homestead and will welcome the NL West first place Los Angeles Dodgers for a three game series starting tomorrow evening.
