Mets clinch series win against Saint Louis Cardinals

The New York Mets (18-18) take down the Cardinals (15-21) thanks to an offensive explosion 7-5.

The Cardinals had a quick start to the game with a lead off home run by Brendan Donovan. Nolan Arenado would continue the scoring with a sacfrice fly to left field scoring Lars Nootbaar, and Alec Burleson would cap off a three run first inning from the Cardinals with an RBI single to right field.

José Buttó kept the Cardinals quiet after a rough first inning. Buttó would only give up two hits the rest of his appearance. The long ball yet again a killer for Buttó, but was able to come back and give the Mets a quality start. His ERA now stands at a 3.00 with a 1.15 WHIP.

The scoring would pick up in the fifth inning when Brandon Nimmo sends a rocket to center field for his 5th home run of the year to tie the game at 3-3. The Mets would continue to add on with a double to center field by Pete Alonso, followed by an RBI single from J.D. Martinez to cap off a six run fifth inning.

The Cardinals would keep the game close with a home run from Alec Burleson to make it a two run game in the 6th, but the Mets bullpen would keep the Cardinals in check. Five relief pitchers made an appearance in the last four innings of the ball game. They combined for two earned run with eight strikeouts.

In the 9th inning Pete Alonso would give the Mets some insurance with a shot to left field for his 9th home run of the year. Pete has been struggling immensely, and finally had his breakout game.

Adam Ottavino came in the 9th due to Edwin Diaz having the off day. The Cardinals made it interesting with a home run from Lars Nootbaar to make it 7-5, but Ottavino would strikeout Paul Goldschmidt and Alec Burleson to end the game for the Mets.
