The New York Mets are back in Flushing to take on the Saint Louis Cardinals.
The Mets are heading into the weekend with a 13-11 overall record and are 7-3 in the last 10 games played. While the three game losing streak left fans questioning the team the Mets came out in the last game of the California road trip with a blow out win over the Giants. A confident booster for the offense but especially for Francisco Lindor who homered twice on Wednesday.
The biggest story heading into the weekend is the Mets debut of JD Martinez. Martinez is officially activated to the roster and is said to be batting 5th tonight. Over his 12 year career JD has a total of 315 home runs , 1002 RBIs, and 1639 hits. Last year with the Dodgers Martinez batted .271, hit 33 home runs, 103 runs batted in, and an OPS of .893. Very exciting time for the Mets as the bats have been getting more consistent since the first 5 games of the season and now the addition of a veteran bat to add in the middle of the order.
The Cardinals are coming off a series win against the Arizona Diamondbacks and are 4-6 in the last 10 games. Even though the Cardinals currently sit in last place in the NL Central with an 11-14 record they have played an extremely competitive schedule this season. However, statistically the Cardinals are in the bottom half of the league in home runs, runs batted in, average, and OPS. For the Cardinals pitching staff league ranks they are 24th in home runs given up with 29, 10th in runs given up with 113, and 25th in average .258.
This is a Cardinals team that the Mets should take care of this weekend, but it is going to be up to the pitchers and getting length from the starters. The walks have been a massive problem for the Mets and while it is still early, starting pitchers can not keep pitching 4 or 5 innings a start. Expect Butto, Houser, and Quintana to be pushed a little more than usual this weekend.
