The New York Mets look to get back to their winning ways after facing two consecutive losses for the first time since starting the season 0-5.
Luis Severino will face Logan Webb in what will be a great pitching match-up. Looking into Logan Webb’s advanced analytics this may seem like a favorable match-up for the Mets. Webb is a low ball pitcher who mixes between mostly change-up, sinker, and sweeper. His velocity does not blow people away but he is very effective in using his pitches and keeps the ball on the ground. Webb is in the 90th percentile at ground-ball rate and the Mets can succeed if they can find holes in the infield. On the season Webb has a 2-1 record with an ERA of 2.93 and 22 strikeouts. Due to Webb’s ground ball success he has been able to get out of innings quickly and has pitched 7 innings in all three starts this year. It will not only be key for the Mets to find ways to get hits but to score with runners in scoring position.
For Severino, like the rest of the pitching staff, he will have to find a way to go past the 5th and possibly 6th inning. The Mets bullpen has been working overtime due to Mets starters not being able to make it out of the 5th inning and you have to think at some point that it will have to change. Severino is the type of pitcher that gets stronger as the season progresses, as he is a big fan of pitching in warm weather. Expect him to have a big night and for Carlos Mendoza to extend his pitch count tonight given he performs in the early part of tonight’s game.
Keys to the game:
For the Mets to win tonight the bats are going to have to revamp to what they were before this two game skid. With Logan Webb being a contact low ball pitcher the Mets should be able to get runners on, but they have to capitalize with runners in scoring position.
